On a silver background is an upright strutting black bear with red claws holding a red ring between its forepaws. (It is the hamlet ring, the original hamlet which symbolizes the later market town of Appenzell).

Name
«Abbacella» (1071) / «Abbatiscella» (1223): «the Abbot's cell» referring to the landlord of the Abbey.
Formation
Formed in 1872 from the area of the former rhodes of Lehn and Rinkenbach.
