Coat of arms On a silver background is an upright strutting black bear with red claws holding a red ring between its forepaws. (It is the hamlet ring, the original hamlet which symbolizes the later market town of Appenzell). Aera Large parts of the town of Appenzell including Rinkenbach, Kau and Meistersrüte. Name «Abbacella» (1071) / «Abbatiscella» (1223): «the Abbot's cell» referring to the landlord of the Abbey. Formation Formed in 1872 from the area of the former rhodes of Lehn and Rinkenbach.
