Overview

The canton of Appenzell Inner Rhodes due to its politics is normally described as having its own unique, sometimesuncil even very individual character. Most probably because of this - even though it is the smallest canton of Switzerland - it has achieved a very high recognition.

Inner Rhodes is a canton that still has a Landsgemeinde (cantonal public voting held outside on the Landsgemeinde Square). The «Landsgemeinde» elects seven members of the Governing Council including one acting Governing Chairman as well as the members of the cantonal and district courts, including their chairmen.

Staatskalender

The Governing Council consists of 7 members, the Greater Council consisting of 46 councillors. At the «Landsgemeinde» of 28th April 1996, a woman was voted for the first time into the Governing Council. In the districit communities, the district councillors are elected each year on the first Sunday in May.
